Hillary Clinton: ‘I’m a progressive,’ attacks Sanders on gun control
Democratic presidential hopefuls faced off in their first debate on Tuesday night and the candidates tried to make their best impressions before a national audience with frontrunner Hillary Clinton setting the tone.
“I’m a progressive. But I’m a progressive who likes to get things done,” she said, addressing the alleged “flip-flopping” on several issues over the years.
Clinton touted her resume and being a part of the Obama administration.
“I recall very well being on a debate stage, I think, about 25 times with then Senator Obama, debating this very issue. After the election, he asked me to become secretary of state. He valued my judgment, and I spent a lot of time with him in the Situation Room, going over some very difficult issues,” Clinton said.

“Over the course of my entire life, I have always fought for the same values and principles, but, like most human beings, including those of us who run for office, I do absorb new information. I do look at what’s happening in the world.”
Clinton also did not shy away from taking on her chief rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders over shifting stance on gun control when asked if Sanders is “tough enough on guns.”
“No, not at all,” she said, before pointing out that Sanders has five times voted against the Brady Bill.
When Martin O’Malley targeted her, she smiled and said, “I was very pleased when Governor O’Malley endorsed me in 2008. I consider him a friend.”
Discussing questions about her private email account, she avowed, “I have been as transparent as I know how to be”—a line that seems destined to be repeated in attack ads by opponents who will connect it to other lawyerly statements by both Hillary and Bill Clinton. Challenged on her refusal to take a stance on the Keystone XL pipeline, she said, “I never took a position on Keystone until I took a position on Keystone.”
“Let me say something that may not be great politics, but I think the secretary is right,” Sanders said at one point. “I think the American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails.” Clinton, looking relieved, turned and shook Sanders’s hand.
