HBO adds ‘Games of Thrones’ season 5 & 6 as Gwendoline Christie joins ‘Hunger Games’
Just as new broke that star Gwendoline Christie from Games of Thrones was signed on to appear in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, HBO renewed the popular sci-fi/fantasy show for two more seasons.
The news comes in the wake of record viewing figures for the latest season premiere, with 6.6 million US fans tuning in on Sunday, 2.2 million more than watched the Season 3 premiere.
Factoring in the repeat later that evening, the show was seen by 8.2 million in the US alone, making it HBO’s most-watched broadcast since the finale of The Sopranos.
Christie, who plays Brienne of Tarth in the HBO series, will be taking on the role of Commander Lyme, the leader of District 13 and a former Hunger Games champion.
The role was initially to have been played by Lily Rabe, but the actress’s theatre commitments have lead to her dropping out of the production.
This will represent Christie’s first major movie role after her work in the first three series of Game Of Thrones.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ Parts 1 arrives in theaters November 21, 2014 with part 2 coming in 2015.
