Haiti chikungunya case count nears 40,000

The number of suspected chikungunya cases in the country of Haiti has grown to 39,343 as of epidemiological week 23, according to The Haiti Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) today (computer translated).

In response to the Haiti epidemic, MSPP officials met with officials from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO-WHO), UNICEF, the Embassy of Taiwanand other organizations to determine what assistance could be given to Haiti for the battle against chikungunya.

The PAHO-WHO, through its representative, Dr. Jean Luc Poncelet, donated 3 million doses of paracetamol for the management of patients with the Chikungunya epidemic.

Taiwan ambassador to Haiti, Mr. Tsai Chiu Hwang committed a donation of 100 thousand U.S. dollars to support the fight against the chikungunya epidemic.

Mr. Kent Ekstrom, logistics manager of MINUSTAH, he said he will contribute significantly in the communication campaign through broadcast audio messages, television, and the installation of billboards; a support fuel is also provided for carrying out fumigation sessions. The PAHO reported in it’s June 13 chikungunya update, 12,000 cases in Haiti. As far as the entire region, PAHO reports 170,000 locally acquired cases as of last week.
