The US Capitol “shutdown” was briefly interrupted as the Capitol was locked down on Thursday after gunshots were fired outside the building following a car chase across central Washington which ended with the woman who drove the car being shot, officials said.

One U.S. official said the woman was killed but this could not be confirmed immediately and a police official said he did not know the condition of the suspect, who was being treated for injuries along with one police officer.

An uninjured child was removed from the woman’s car, source confirmed.

Kevin Rincon reports that the Capitol police officer was injured when his car was hit by a metal barricade rising out of the ground near the Capitol. He was rushing to respond to the reports of gunfire when his car was lifted into the air by the barrier and came down onto its front grill.

Secret Service engaged the woman as she drove through a barricade, crashed into a police car and started a car chase.

More details are being released, so check back for news.
