The bill, principally authored by Representative and nurse, Becky Currie (R-District 92) restricts the practice of nontherapeutic or elective abortion to
90 the period up to the fifteenth week of gestation ( except in a medical emergency and in cases of severe fetal abnormality).
The law does not make exceptions in cases of rape or incest.
Gov. Bryant tweeted Monday–I was proud to sign House Bill 1510 this afternoon. I am committed to making Mississippi the safest place in America for an unborn child, and this bill will help us achieve that goal.
Today he tweeted–I pray today we have saved the first life of an unborn child in Mississippi.
Both Republican-controlled chambers passed the bill overwhelmingly in early March, by a vote of 35-14 in the Senate and 76-34 in the House.
Physicians that intentionally or knowingly violates the provisions of the law could face civil penalties and have their medical license suspended or revoked.
