GOP challenger Steve Stockman targets John Cornyn on debt ceiling vote
The Senate vote to raise the debt ceiling has created a firestorm in the GOP. Ted Cruz pushed for a filibuster which raised the required votes needed to pass the bill from 51 to 60. This step created deeper division in the Republican Party and criticisms from Tea Party candidates, like Steve Stockman, towards establishment GOP members.
As GOP strategist John Feehery pointed out, Democrats control 55 votes, so without Cruz’s maneuver, they would have been fully responsible, politically, for raising the debt ceiling. Instead, Cruz put GOP leadership on the spot.
John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell led the flip-flop to move the measure and now support Cruz with another example of “I voted against it after I voted for it” due to political gain.
Cornyn’s GOP challenger saw it differently.
“John Cornyn is treating Ted Cruz’s back like his own personal cutlery holder,” Stockman tweeted after the vote.
Cornyn focused on the fact that he voted against raising the debt ceiling, rather than on crucial procedural vote that cleared the way for the Senate majority to win the day.
“After five years of out-of-control White House spending, including a jobless, trillion-dollar stimulus, now is hardly the time to give the President carte blanche to continue his spending spree,” Cornyn said in a statement. “I voted against raising the debt ceiling because we need sensible reforms to cut down on spending and restrain Washington going forward.”

Cruz issued a blanket denunciation of everyone who sided against him.
Today’s vote is yet another example that establishment politicians from both parties are simply not listening to the American people. Outside the beltway, Americans of all political stripes understand that we cannot keep spending money we don’t have.
Some members of Congress care so much about being praised by the Washington media that they’re willing to mortgage our children’s future. They pretend we don’t have a problem and can just kick the can down the road.
Let’s be clear about the motive behind this vote — there are too many members of Congress who think they can fool people and they will forget about it the next week. But sometimes, come November, the people remember.
