Godzilla is dominating the box office and Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are moving forward with a sequel, according to Variety. Director Gareth Edwards has news of his own as Disney announced he will direct the first of the Star Wars spin-off films, set to arrive in 2016.

“It’s very validating,” Legendary president and chief creative officer Jon Jashni said to Variety of the film’s $93 million opening in the US and over $200 million globally.

“You can’t ask for a better situation when you have a group of people, who were perhaps expecting to be let down were impressed,” Jashni added. “It all lines up when that eco-system aligns and starts feeding off itself.”

While the sequel wouldn’t seem likely before 2017, the film’s director appears to be headed to the Star Wars franchise.

Heat Vision broke the news that Edwards will next direct the first Star Wars spinoff film, and Lucasfilm subsequently confirmed Edwards’ involvement, adding that the pic will open in theaters in 3D on December 16, 2016.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards in a statement release after THR broke the news.
Legendary CEO Thomas Tull confirmed that Godzilla 2 is a ways off in his statement regarding the Star Wars news:

“The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”

Rumors have swirled about a Young Han Solo film, a Yoda centered movie or one following Boba Fett. One of the more detailed reports – click HERE

Heading into the Memorial Day weekend Godzilla had already earned over $220 million worldwide.
