‘Godzilla 2’ set for 2018, Rodan Mothra and Ghidorah still teased
Fans at SDCC got a tease revealing that Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah will all pop up in the sequel to this year’s blockbuster Godzilla reboot. Now Legendary & Warner Bros. have finally assigned a release date for the return of The King of Monsters.
Godzilla 2 will hit theaters on June 8th, 2018, meaning that director Gareth Edwards will be moving straight from his Star Wars spin-off, slated to arrive on December 16th, 2016, back to the franchise reboot he helped kickstart.
First Showing summarizes these creatures, saying “Rodan is a mutated pterosaur, designed after a type of prehistoric reptile, Mothra is basically a giant radioactive moth, and Ghidorah is a three-headed dragon with large wings and two tails.”
“That’s what we want to do, yes,” Legendary Pictures chief Thomas Tull said at SDCC about the creatures in a sequel. “Now we have more monsters to play with, and we’re excited about it.”
Edwards has sounded like a fan of the idea as well.
“With the exception of the 1954 original, I would say my second favorite film is Destroy All Monsters. I just love the idea of a monster island. Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically. I wouldn’t want to limit it to one other foe, I think it’s more fun to – this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel – but I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira.”
The new Godzilla film starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston and Ken Watanabe. The film earned of $200 in US box office and nearly $508 globally.
Godzilla 2 is set for June 8, 2018.
