GM recalls 293K Chevy Cruze vehicles over brake problems

General Motors is recalling nearly 293,000 Chevrolet Cruze compact cars in the U.S. because the power-assisted brakes can fail.

The company says the recall affects Cruzes made in Lordstown, Ohio, from the 2011 and 2012 model years.

The cars have 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engines and 6T-40 six-speed automatic transmissions.

GM says the power brake boosters can fail and in rare cases, drivers may have to put extra pressure on the pedals to stop the cars. GM says Cruze brake problems have caused 27 low-speed crashes but no injuries.

Dealers will replace a switch in the power brake vacuum pipe assembly for free. The recall also applies to nearly 45,000 vehicles in Canada and several hundred in Israel.

GM announced the recall of nearly 194,000 SUVs in June due to risk of fire.

This recall comes only a year after a massive recall in 2012. That issue involved modifying the under-engine shield so flammable liquids are not trapped in the engine compartment, thus preventing massive vehicle fires.

Shares of GM were up eight cents to $34.63 in early afternoon trading despite the news.

Have Your Say

Just wanted to let you know that more and more it seems like General Motors is running into more problems with the Chevrolet Cruze. For instance, I am constantly having problems with the car since I bought it in 2012 (brakes, electronics, acceleration, transmission, rpms running higher than they should, and so on and so forth) but with no resolution in sight. In fact, in the last two weeks I have had two independent diagnostics run on the car and they have come back with codes in the computer (both times). Purposely not taking the codes or reports to the dealer, I have requested the car be looked over by the dealer for repairs – and every time that I have tried to repair the vehicle the dealers have claimed that the car is fine because they cannot find anything! Honestly all I can say is that I definitely recommend that no one should buy a Chevrolet Cruze ever ! And of course any other General Motors product!
