Georgia beats Florida then fan kills herself in the parking garage in botched murder suicide
The seventh ranked Georgia Bulldogs pulled away late to defeat the ninth ranked Florida Gators, 36-17, taking control of the SEC East.
Then tragedy struck following the game as the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office report that a woman was arguing with a man, pulled her handgun, fired shots, then shot and killed herself.
The shooting occurred in a parking garage on Ashley Street and A Philip Randolph Boulevard. Police responded quickly with SWAT. The other person was not injured.
“#JSO is currently working a person shot at Ashley and APR. At this time, it is being worked as a self inflicted gun shot wound. Further information will be forthcoming. We do not believe there is any threat to the public.” was posted on Twitter as fans were delayed over an hour-and-a-half exiting the area.
“Near the stadium where police say a person was shot —witnesses tell me they heard a woman and man arguing and several shots fired. @ActionNewsJax” tweeted CBS reporter Amber Krycka. “Sadly JSO says the woman who shot herself is dead. They are talking to several witnesses right now.
“Just talked to a witness who said she was terrified. She heard 4-5 shots fired and someone yelling, “active shooter” and she ran for her life.”
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives handling the investigation and working this death investigation as a suicide.
Six days ago, six people were shot on A. Phillip Randolph, about one-half mile from the stadium. It happened about 30 minutes before kickoff of the Texans-Jaguars game.
In response to Sunday’s shooting, Jacksonville police increased security prior to the Georgia-Florida game. Police said more than 600 officers would be working in and around TIAA Bank Field on game day.
