George Soros likens the EU to the Soviet Union, warning of looming collapse
If you are a big fan of the Soviet regime, then George Soros’ recent op-ed just rally you to support the European Union to prevent the looming collapse.
Soros begins: “Europe is sleepwalking into oblivion and its people need to wake up before it is too late. If they don’t, the European Union will go the way of the Soviet Union in 1991. Neither our leaders nor ordinary citizens seem to understand that we are experiencing a revolutionary moment, that the range of possibilities is very broad, and that the eventual outcome is thus highly uncertain.”
Soros details the political struggles and divides in Germany before taking aim at the British leaders driving the Brexit movement…or “allowing it” as Soros sees things.
“Both Labour and the Conservatives are internally divided, but their leaders, Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May, respectively, are determined to deliver Brexit,” the leftist billionaire writes for the Guardian. “Collusion between Corbyn and May has aroused opposition in both parties, which in the case of Labour is bordering on rebellion. May has announced a programme to aid impoverished pro-Brexit Labour constituencies in the north of England. And Corbyn is accused of betraying the pledge he made at Labour’s last party conference to back a second Brexit referendum if he can’t trigger a general election.”
Soros takes aim at the EU’s approach to open borders, the influx of immigration impacting Italy and others, leaving a divide for voters. In addition, anti-migrant policies and anti-democratic actions in eastern Europe have put countries like Hungary and Poland on a path towards potential disciplinary action with the rest of the EU.
Soros said Europe needed to recognize its enemies and then “awaken the sleeping pro-European majority and mobilize it to defend the values on which the EU was founded.”
“Otherwise, the dream of a united Europe could become the nightmare of the twenty-first century.”
Soros loves the idea of the collective, the EU as a whole, and NOT the power of each sovereign nation.
“One can still make a case for preserving the EU in order radically to reinvent it. But that would require a change of heart within the EU. The current leadership is reminiscent of the politburo when the Soviet Union collapsed – continuing to issue edicts as if they were still relevant.”
