Geoff Johns: ‘Wonder Woman’ has caused Warner Bros to makes ‘movies fun’ with ‘optimism at the base’

Warner Bros hasn’t really struck acclaim with their first few DC Comics adaptations until Wonder Woman. Now creator, DC head Geoff Johns confessed that this has led to a change in “philosophy” for the DC movies.

Talking to The Wrap, Johns admits the studio has to: “Get to the essence of the character and make the movies fun. Just make sure that the characters are the characters with heart, humor, hope, heroics, and optimism at the base.”

Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad are gloomy films, bogged down by repetition and weird plot points (the Martha link is the biggest) after Man of Steel attempted to re-brand Superman.

The Wrap notes that “director Patty Jenkins brought those ideals to life on-screen, and producer Chuck Roven led the charge behind the scenes, in a film with more hope than its often-dark predecessors…”

Johns and studio veteran Jon Berg, who has a close relationship with new Batman Ben Affleck, plan to carry the more positive tone forward into the upcoming DC films, including this year’s Justice League.

Moving away from Snyder’s control, last May Kevin Tsujihara, chairman of Warner Bros. Entertainment, Greg Silverman, the former president of Creative Development and Worldwide Production and Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Consumer Products — decided to give oversight of the DC film projects to the dynamic duo of Johns and Berg.

Toby Emmerich, the new president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures, helped complete the formation of the new DC film team: Johns reports to Nelson and Berg reports to Emmerich.

“There’s intense scrutiny on everything we do, particularly in this world, in the DC superhero universe,” said Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing and distribution for Warner Bros. in an interview Vanity Fair. “The trick for us was to broaden out this movie beyond the core audience of superhero fans. The balance we were trying to find was [to market] a superhero film that transcended the genre, that worked both for males and females, and never denigrated the proposition. That didn’t play into any of the baggage, the cliches.”

Joss Whedon

Avengers director Joss Whedon has been brought in to fine tune the re-shoots for the Justice League film, so fans can be certain of two things: more Wonder Woman and more laughs. Danny Elfman has now been brought in to score the film, so the changes are happening now (more on that HERE).

The JL stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Ezra Miller as The Flash.

Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his role of Lex Luthor with Ciaran Hinds as the featured DC Comics bad guy: Steppenwolf.

Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Diane Lane as Mrs. Kent will be part of the cast with (presumably) Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne. Newcomers are J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard as Mera and Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko.

Billy Crudup can be seen having a cameo in the film, introducing to Henry Allen, Barry Allen’s father — see the photo below.

Up next for Warner/DCU is Aquaman, set for next year, followed by The Flash, a Shazam/Black Adam film with Dwayne Johnson starring and a standalone Cyborg film. Another Superman film and solo Batman are also moving ahead with Whedon set to helm a Batgirl movie.

Oh yeah, obviously the studio is moving ahead on a Wonder Woman sequel, more on that HERE

Justice League arrives in theaters on November 17.
