Fresno County reports first human West Nile case, mosquito that carries dengue and yellow fever detected
Fresno County, California health officials are reporting the first human West Nile virus case in a Riverdale woman, making her the second case reported state-wide, according to a Fresno Bee report Friday.
According to health officials, the woman has been hospitalized since June 16 and may have been infected in the beginning of the month.
A Sacramento County male resident tested positive for WNV earlier this year. His illness, as well as his laboratory test results, are potentially consistent with West Nile neuroinvasive disease.
Last year, California recorded 479 cases, second only to Texas.
In addition, Fresno County officials issued an Invasive Species Alert earlier after the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, was detected by the Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District.
This mosquito is not native to California and is an efficient carrier of diseases such as dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya. No illnesses associated with this mosquito have been reported so far.
Health officials are advising the public to report mosquito bites received during the day and report any mosquitoes which match the following description:
Aedes aegypti is a small, dark mosquito with white markings and banded legs. It may be active around dusk and dawn but bites most often during the day and often bites indoors.
