Frank Marshall confirms both Matt Damon and Jeremy Renner ‘Bourne’ films are moving forward

Producer Frank Marshall says there is no Paul Greengrass, Matt Damon deal on a new Bourne film and Universal is moving forward with the Jeremy Renner project as well: “We’re on two tracks,” Marshall says.

Marshall tells The Hollywood Reporter that the second Jeremy Renner film isn’t dead, or even delayed quite yet, because the Damon/Greengrass movie doesn’t have signed deals in place.

“That [Jeremy Renner] movie is moving forward. It’s still in development. We’re working to get a script as soon as possible.”

The article notes that the news could be more politics than actual good news for fans of the franchise on Greengrass’ involvement.

“But as with everything in Hollywood, studio politics could be in play. Greengrass has been negotiating to direct the Jewell picture, but sources say Fox’s Jim Gianopulos has been deciding whether it’s ready for a green light. That has lead to speculation that Greengrass’ camp could be floating the Bourne return to force Fox’s hand — or at least nudge Fox toward a decision,” writers the THR.

Marshall says in the above quote the script for the Renner film, which was set to be directed by Justin Lin, isn’t ready. Greengrass apparently has a “a strong concept that would return Damon to his most lucrative role” but that’s it at the moment. “We’re on two tracks. And if this one [with Damon and Greengrass] comes together, great, but they’re still just talking,” Marshall says.

Lin is now set to direct two episodes of the second season of HBO’s True Detective – more HERE

If all goes according to plan, though, both films will get released eventually, expanding the franchise leading up to an inevitable Renner vs. Damon showdown/partnership.

Bourne 5 is now set for July 15, 2016.
