Florida woman, Kathryn Allen charged with mailing hoax anthrax letters to Sens. Nelson and Rubio, others
A Jasper, Florida woman is facing up to 45 years in prison if found guilty on nine counts of mailing hoax anthrax letters to the offices of U.S. Sens. Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson.
The United States Attorney’s Office unsealed an indictment Tuesday charging 45-year-old Kathryn Allen.
News 4 in Jacksonville reports that according to the indictment, between June 24, 2011, and June 28, 2011, Allen mailed threatening letters containing a white powdery substance to the senators’ Jacksonville offices.
She also mailed similar letters to the Hamilton County Correctional Institution, the Hamilton County Health Department, the Hamilton County Tax Collector’s Office, the Florida Department of Children and Families, and to three private citizens, according to the indictment.
Field and lab tests show the white substance was not hazardous.
It is not clear what Allen’s motive was in sending the letters.
Allen’s husband told reporters that his wife did not send those letters. He did not say anything else.
A tentative trial date of Oct. 1 was set.
Rubio’s office commended law enforcement according to a statement released today.
