Florida Ortho announces Stem Cell Therapy

PRESS RELEASE: Florida Orthopaedic Institute announces developments in the use of stem cell therapy. Spine and sports physicians, Dr. Steven Barna and Dr. Grant G. Garlick, have participated in stem cell therapy training and patients can now take advantage of the body’s ability to heal itself by using healthy regenerative cells that can be found throughout the body.

Florida Ortho inst logo_with_taglineAccording to the New York Stem Cell Summit, approximately one million patients have been treated with stem cell therapy since the mid-1980s and in 2010 the number of patients treated with stem cell therapy was just over 90,000.

Stem cell therapy can benefit patients suffering from herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, rotator cuff tears, labral tears and joint pain due to osteoarthritis in the hip, knee and shoulder. Stem cells are obtained from the patient, thus it does not pose an immunogenic threat and patients are protected from viral, bacteria or other foreign contaminant.

In November 2013, Don Etchison, a 65 year-old avid tennis player with osteoarthritis from Tampa, underwent stem cell therapy treatment by Dr. Steven Barna. Prior to stem cell therapy, Etchison’s osteoarthritis was affecting his ability to wrap his right hand around a tennis racket. After six weeks of the stem cell therapy treatment, Etchison was able to touch his index finger to his palm and within eight weeks was scheduled to play competitive tennis matches.

“Regenerative cells are replacing the traditional treatment methods and can have positive benefits for patients,” says Dr. Steven Barna, interventional spine and regenerative medicine physician at Florida Orthopaedic Institute.

Laboratory and clinical research have shown that it is possible to use regenerative cells to restore and repair damaged or aging cells and effectively regenerate tissue in the body. Regenerative cells are found in bone marrow and specialized extraction equipment is used to concentrate the regenerative cells. After concentration, a surgeon implants the cells into the site of an injury. On average, patients see benefits within 10 to 12 weeks. Additionally, stem cell therapy allows patients to receive orthopedic care on an outpatient basis.
