Florida murder suicide: Joseph Sutton, wife Karen Sutton identified as couple found dead in Sun City

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has identified the couple found in their Sun City, Florida home Friday, dead from an apparent murder suicide.

The couple were Joseph Sutton, 74, and his wife Karen Sutton, 73. Deputies confirmed that they are still investigating what happened inside the home at 2205 Preservation Green Court in Sun City Center, but said both died from gunshot wounds.

HCSO says that the neighbors called 911 around 7:45 p.m. Friday after hearing gunshots.

When deputies arrived they found female clothing scattered on the walkway leading up to the front door of the home. When deputies knocked on the door, no one answered. Deputies were able to look through a front window, where they saw what appeared to be blood on the floor.

The couple is from Western New York. Joseph retired in 1998 from the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda School District where he taught physical education, as well as teaching at Franklin Middle School and Kenmore West High School during his career at Ken-Ton, which began in the 1970-1971 school year, according to a district spokesperson.

  1. Ken says:

Mr. Sutton was recently identified in Buffalo, NY media as being responsible for the grooming and sexual abuse of female students in the Kenmore-Tonawanda School District in the 1970s and 1980s. Two middle-aged victims had approached the school district seeking closure, but were rebuffed due to the statute of limitations. Their lives continue to be affected by the decades-old abuse.
