Florida man, Christopher Belcher, arrested in South Carolina, for death of wife Gwen Belcher
Christopher Belcher, suspected of murdering his wife, sticking her in the trunk of a car and setting it on fire, was apprehended in South Carolina on Thursday afternoon.
Word of his arrest was met with happiness by his wife’s family and friends.
“I am glad they got him alive,” said Benjamin Edward, Gwen Belcher’s brother. “I want to go to court and look at him in the face and say, ‘What kind of man are you?'”
Belcher was found at his sister’s home in Greenville, by members of the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office, Greenville City Police, and U.S. Marshals.
Gwen Belcher, his wife and a mother of three, was found dead in her burnt out car on September 17, just a day after having a fight with her husband. Family members and friends desperately searched for her, until her body was found.
Christopher Belcher was originally released from jail on October 2, after the State Attorney’s office elected to drop charges of domestic violence due to lack of evidence.
But On October 3, the medical examiner’s office confirmed that Gwen had been murdered, upgrading the case to a homicide. By the time the assault was deemed a murder, Belcher was nowhere to be found.
He will be transported back to Hillsborough County, and is expected to be charged with second-degree murder and arson of an occupied structure.
