Florida Amendment 2, legalizing medical marijuana projected to fail

The constitutional amendment to legalize medical marijuana in Florida is proving to be less popular than projected by supporters who claimed that amendment would find broad support, crossing political, racial and age lines. TV ads and sheriffs speaking out against the amendment may be the major contributor to the amendment falling short.

TBT has the amendment evenly split with “only 48 percent of likely voters said they would vote for Amendment 2. Forty-four percent oppose it and 7 percent said they had not made up their minds.” The requirement for passage is sixty percent, which seems like an impossible hurdle.

“My guess today is this is not going to pass,” said David Colburn, director of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service. “It may not mean that Floridians don’t support the use of medical marijuana,” he said, but apparently many voters dislike the amendment’s wording and embedding it into the state Constitution.

Ricardo Baca at The Cannibist does have much hope. “The results of a random phone survey of 861 likely voters in Florida show that Amendment 2 doesn’t stand the best chances of passing with the needed 60 percent approval,” he says in the Oct. 28 coverage (citing a  new poll from Gravis Marketing.)

“50 percent of the Florida voters stated they would vote yes on the amendment while 42 percent stated they’d vote no,” the poll’s recap reads according to the site. “With only eight days remaining until the election, a powerful eight percent of undecided voters might hold the key to whether or not this ballot initiative passes or fails to receive the mandatory 60 percent support needed to make a change to the State of Florida’s constitution.”

“My sense is that people are organized against it far more than those favoring it,” said Christopher McCarty, director of the UF Survey Research Center and director of the University of Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research.

What are some reasons:

  • Caregivers “don’t need to be licensed or checked or anything” was the feeling of one opponent in the TBT article.
  • Another points to the lack of legal protections (how will landlords or employers who oppose the pot users respond without legal penalty, where will pot shops be opened – near a school or church?) More HERE
  • Some voters want to see if the ” low-THC cannibis” version which was supported by Gov. Rick Scott and others will be enough to help those who medically need without opening up pot for general use.

Maybe none of this is true, maybe it’s the powerful, high dollar political ads actaully working. Either way, Amendment 2 and Florida stab at legalization appears to be doomed.

Folks love to mention Adelson in their coverage but almost nobody mentions Soros? Why is that? The Yes crowd do have an endless list of talking points but none will answer why this is needed or why we need to amend the constitution. I have read many threads on the subject and, like Todd, hurl attacks. There’s the overly used crutch “alcohol is worse” false equivalence argument. Then there’s the Appeal to Nature fallacy, Appeal to God, Appeal to Emotion etc. It’s like they’re reading a script. “Do some research” is also used heavily in place of having to defend their position.

I have done my research including Pub Med, Cochrane Library etc. There just isn’t any evidence of it’s usefulness, safety or efficacy. And no, testing on rodents doesn’t count. If the amendment fails, it will be because the Yes folks utterly failed to make and defend their case. Refusing to explain why, bullying, strawman arguments, logical fallacies and conspiracy theories just isn’t going to win friends and influence people.

Not to mention that about 95% of the Yes crowd are always angry, hostile and elitist. I thought weed was supposed to relax you. THAT is why it will most likely fail and that’s partially why I took some delight in voting No.

“My sense is that people are organized against it far more than those favoring it,” Hmm interesting sound byte until you consider that only 80 individuals or organization have contributed to the “NO” campaign while at the same time over 5600 organizations have contributed to the “YES” campaign. In addition dirty out of State casino money has given the NO group some slimy capital to spin their lies. Anyone not in favor of amendment 2 is ether ignorant, evil or both.

It hard to believe how brain washed or ashamed to admit the No on 2 are and how their beloved Government and Churches have Lied to them but lets re-read what made Cannabis illegal and the corruption that followed. In his speach to 1936 Congress from the fist drug czar Harry Anslinger There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.
The primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.
Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.
Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.
Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing
You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.
Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.
