Florida AG, Pam Bondi, uses emergency powers to outlaw ‘bath salts’, synthetic pot

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi used emergency powers to designate 22 new synthetic drugs, to include “bath salts,” “K2” and “Spice” as Schedule I controlled substances in the Sunshine State Tuesday, according to a news release Dec. 11.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, some examples of substances listed in Schedule I are: heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), marijuana (cannabis), peyote, methaqualone, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (“Ecstasy”).
It is now a third-degree felony for an individual to “sell, manufacture, or deliver, or possess with intent to sell, manufacture or deliver” these drugs.
Bondi has been a force against synthetic drugs since taking office. In 2011, Attorney General Pam Bondi signed an emergency rule that temporarily outlawed MDPV, commonly known as “bath salts.”
“Synthetic cannabinoids have been linked to thousands of emergency department visits across the country, and a majority of those visits are by patients ages 12-29,” stated Attorney General Pam Bondi. “I am grateful to our law enforcement partners and the health care community for their continued dedication to protecting Florida’s youth from these horrible drugs.”
At a news conference Tuesday, Bondi expressed disdain for the marketing of these harmful substances.
“Our children are overdosing. These have now hit our entire state, and I just want to point out to you the marketing,” Bondi said at a news conference. She pointed to a packet labeled “cotton candy.” Another was branded “Scooby Snacks”, reported the Tampa Bay Times.
“These are marketed to children,” she said.
FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey piggy-backed on Bondi’s statement saying, “These dangerous drugs are widely available in smoke shops, truck stops, convenience stores and through the internet. Retailers who stock these products have two options: surrender their inventory or face enforcement action.”
The Attorney General is not through, as she said she will work with legislators in the 2013 session to further ban these drugs.
