Five-year-old girl crushed to death by a SUV in Brooklyn
In a tragic incident, a 5-year-old girl was crushed by a SUV at a Brooklyn intersection. The incident happened near 5th Ave. and 55th St. in Sunset Park on Thursday, September 26.
The accident took place at round 3:15 p.m. when the girl left her mom’s hand and wandered to the ongoing traffic. At the intersection, the little girl got hit by a white Cadillac Escalade and was crushed to death.
The nearby store owners commented that the girl lay still on the road bleeding profusely. Later, she was taken to the Lutheran Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, shortly after 4 p.m. The officials don’t suspect any criminal motive behind the accident.
In a recent data shared by the New York City’s Department of Motor Vehicle, about 1,800 kids are hit by cars and trucks in New York City each year.
Charles DiMaggio an Associate Professor at Columbia University who studies public health said, “Kids really are the most unpredictable pedestrians, which puts the responsibility for their safety much more squarely on the shoulders of adults and drivers.”
While the data is down by one-third since 2001, more kids are killed by car crashes than by gun attacks in New York City.
