Five traits employers look for in the modern economy
With how fast technology is changing the world, everyone wants to know just what employers are looking for and how they can get themselves noticed. We talked to recruiting & career expert Noe Bernal of HajocaCareers.com and keyed in on these 5 traits every employer wants to find in their new hires.
1. Confidence
Keep in mind, there’s a difference between being confident and being arrogant. Someone who is confident in a positive way are comfortable with themselves. They know their strengths and aren’t afraid to admit to their weaknesses, they speak honestly about what they can do, and they never make others feel inferior so they can feel better about themselves. Speaking boldly and proudly of your accomplishments shows you know you can do a good job – always an attractive quality.
2. Enthusiasm
Nobody wants to hire somebody who doesn’t want to work there. A poor attitude toward the job brings others down and is usually linked to poor job performance. On the flip side, you don’t want to just seem desperate for a job, any job. You want to show the company that you are enthusiastic about the job and the work itself. If it’s not an area of work you find wildly appealing, then you should at least communicate enthusiasm about your ability to do the job well and finding pride in your work.
3. Professionalism
Confidence and enthusiasm are great, but if you can’t do your job efficiently and effectively, it doesn’t make much of a difference. Professionalism means treating the job with the respect it deserves. You can demonstrate professionalism by paying attention to resume details, dressing appropriately for interviews, and indicating that you intend to take the job seriously with no room for distractions.
4. Self-Monitoring
Even if you have a manager over you, you don’t want them to have to babysit you once you’ve learned your task. Employers like to know you can work independently if necessary. If possible, give examples of times you have worked successfully without supervision or guidance. This communicates that you monitor yourself and work to do your very best even without someone watching over your shoulder. Most employers would prefer to give their employees some independence, so they are attracted to those who seem like they would thrive in that environment.
5. Communication
You showcase your written communication in your resume and cover letter and your verbal communication in your interview. Both are essential. It’s why people hire someone to edit their application documents and conduct mock interviews with them. Show off your ability to communicate now as something they’ll remember later. Don’t simply recite memorized spiels. Instead, listen carefully to their questions, and answer them thoughtfully.
If you can showcase all these qualities on your resume and in an interview, you’ll have a good chance of getting the job. If you don’t have these qualities, now is a good time to start building them up. It may be the difference between a job you love and one you can’t stand. Good luck with the job search!
