Five star film reviews: 40th Anniversary of ‘Jaws’ proves it’s timeless
While fans flocked to the theaters for Jurassic World and Inside Out, Steven Spielberg’s classic film Jaws celebrated its 40th anniversary thanks to a special screening courtesy of Fathom Events and TCM.
Nearly everyone knows the story of the killer great white shark which takes up the waters off the coast of quiet Northeast town called Amity. After repeat killings, Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) convinces the town to hire the rugged and raw shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) to hunt and kill with creature. Richard Dreyfuss steals scenes as the oceanographer and shark expert Hooper with a slew off great performances, including those from Lorraine Gray and Murray Hamilton.
Spielberg career exploded after Jaws became the highest grossing film of all-time (til Star Wars came along two years later) and the “Summer Blockbuster” was birthed.
What Culture posted an article five years on “Why Jaws may be the greatest film of all-time” and it’s hard to argue after screening the film with 2015 sound and a digitally remastered print. The scares and laughs still working perfectly as the audience quotes the famous lines (“Here’s to swimmin’ with bow-legged women” and “You’re gonna need a bigger boat!”
Fathom is hosting the encore on Wednesday, June 24, so plan to check out the screening and I promise the John Williams iconic theme will almost give you goosebumps.
The images still amaze as the creative “water level” shots engulf you into the Spielberg journey, ripe with Hooper quips and Quint rants you wish you could quote.
Jaws is the quintessential 5 stars film – just as great today as when it arrived in theaters on June 20, 1975.
In addition to the feature, audiences will be treated to a special introduction by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz.
Tickets for the “TCM Presents: Jaws 40th Anniversary” can be purchased online by visiting www.FathomEvents.com, or at participating theater box offices.
