If there is one thing we hold most true about men’s fashion and everything that it comprises, it is that it pays to dress well. Furthermore, it pays to wear the right outfit to every occasion, whether it’s a business meeting, a casual Friday, or a walk in the park. But the problem is not all men are able to discern the line between stylish and tacky. Some just wear the first thing they pull of out of their drawers and let the rest of the world deal with their decision.

But not everyone can get away with dressing poorly. Hang on, we’ll take that back. No one can and should get away with dressing poorly. And as long as the lineage of Benedict Cumberbatch, David Beckham, and Tom Hiddleston survives, men will never run out of role models when it comes to power dressing. Having said that, you have no excuse to look like your mother dressed you in total darkness, especially if your goal is to feel superior.

The question is what are the fashion mistakes you should avoid? Here are five of the most commonplace blunders that pervaded the world of men’s fashion and what to do about them.

  1. Ill-fitting Clothes
If you’re looking for a surefire way to look lousy in an instant, wear clothes that do not fit you well. Whether it is a shirt that is too loose or too tight, trousers whose length is too long or too short, or a suit that isn’t tailored to your figure, all of these can make you look like you rummaged through someone else’s wardrobe and donned the first few pieces on your way out. In addition, ill-fitting clothes are uncomfortable and ups your risk of snagging a loose thread on something pointed and then ruining your entire ensemble altogether.

When shopping for clothes, buy only the ones that fit your body just right. In cases where nothing hugs your built properly and you still want to buy the article, have a trusty tailor alter it according to your size.

  1. Excessively Customized Jeans

Sure, ripped jeans can give you a bolder appeal but anything that makes you look like you wrestled with a tiger should be set on fire—literally. The same thing goes for studs, acid washes, and the pairs whose crotch are practically touching the floor. You shouldn’t also wear jeans that are super tight or the ones that are made of leather if it’s the classy look you’re going for. Instead, go for the pairs that fall perfectly and allow your thighs and legs to breathe and move.

  1. Mismatched Socks

One of the most common cases of this particular fashion crime is the wearing of white cotton socks with dress shoes. Those pairs belong with your trainers and your bedroom on winter nights. When dressing up for formal events, wear socks that match your trousers and if possible, ones that are of silk or a similarly thin material. But if you want to unleash your adventurous side, you can also go for printed ones such as argyle, striped, or a polka dot pattern. Just make sure that its colors don’t clash with the rest of your outfit. Believe us—there is a difference between coordinated and conflicting.

  1. Sports Jerseys

If it isn’t a part of your uniform, never wear anything sports attire when you’re not doing anything sporty. These pieces of clothing are made with a specific purpose in mind and that is to make exercising comfortable. All right, you can wear them over your shirt when cheering for your favorite sports team but you don’t have to wear it throughout the day especially if you’re going somewhere else that has nothing to do with the game you just watched. Also, the wearing of trainers with clothes that have nothing to do with exercising is a no-no. If you want to pull off a casual look, reach for a pair of boat shoes or loafers.

  1. Visible Underwear

Unless you are a walking underwear endorsement, keep you’re the sight of your pants away from the public eye. There are a lot of men who live in the delusion that showing off the band of their underwear makes them sexy that they do it deliberately. What they don’t know however is there’s a line between sensual and crass. And besides, that is what belts are for—to secure your trousers so that your underwear doesn’t get to wave at anyone who happens to catch a glimpse of your waist.

Apart from washing your hands off these slip-ups, don’t forget that it’s perfectly all right to experiment with your clothes. But as grownups, it wouldn’t hurt if you operate under the idea that you should dress appropriately depending on the occasion and the setting.
