First look: Chloe Bennet as Quake, new costume for ‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 3
The Inhumans have been introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a key member of S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) team is one of them. Season 2 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC dealt with this revelation and how enhanced individuals sharing an alien ancestry are hidden among us on Earth.
Skye (Chloe Bennet) is one of them, revealed to be the Marvel Comics character known as Daisy Johnson a.k.a. “Quake.”
Now serving as a super-powered agent for Coulson, Nick Fury, and what’s left of the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, Quake is leading a new team that’s specifically designed to track, recruit and deal with other powered individuals, with season 3 basing itself on the “Secret Warriors” comic stories for which the Quake got her big break.
LA Times just revealed the first clear look at Chloe Bennet suited up in her new Marvel Comics-inspired tactical field outfit, first revealed in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 teaser trailer. This Quake costume honors both Daisy Johnson’s look from the comics with an obvious nod to Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow cat suits featured in the Marvel movies.Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. costume designer Ann Foley, who previously designed Bobbi Morse’s Mockingbird (Adrian Palicki) tactical suit and Mike Peterson’s Deathlok (J. August Richards) armor, worked with Bennet on designing Skye’s new duds, power gauntlets and all.
“It’s about strength. She feels very empowered in it…. That’s what was important to me, that she felt empowered to me. I wanted to stay true to some of the designs I saw in the comics. In the style lines, I wanted to pay a little bit of a tribute to her tactical ability from last season, but we also incorporated the Quake symbol into her gauntlets and on the back of her suit.”
In addition to the Quake symbol subtly designed into the back fabric and gauntlets, it’s the gauntlets themselves that serve as the key unique visual identifier for Quake.
Bennet managed to guess her character’s future correctly as she recalls.
“I get a knock on my trailer and it’s Jeph Loeb, Jeff Bell, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon … and they’re like ‘Can we talk to you?’ I was like, ‘Oh, great. I’m dead.’ They come into my trailer and say, ‘So, do you want to guess who you are?’ I guess and they say ‘Yeah! How did you know that?’”
The series couldn’t come at a better time with Captain America: Civil War serving as the next film in the franchise coming right around the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 finale next year.
