First ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ trailer reveals action and hysterical jokes

Sony has released the first Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle trailer, confirming the footage descriptions when it was screened at CinemaCon. Also released is the official first poster promoting the film.

The long-awaited sequel centers on four high schoolers who, during their time in detention, come across the video game Jumanji, and are quickly sucked into the game world. Once there, they take on the appearance of avatars played by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black. Read the full synopsis at the bottom.

Check out the footage below, because it is a hysterical twist on the Jumanji premise.

Instead of the adventure coming into the real world, the real world characters have to navigate the traps in Jumanji before their “lives” run out. Just from the this trailer, which is enough of a tease so I hope they don’t spoil anything else, pokes fun at video game cliches: Gillan’s teen talking through her avatar about how her skimpy outfit is inappropriate for the jungle and the rugged Johnson mentioning his need of allergy meds. Just awesome.

Then there’s Hart, who is just fantastic in these clips. He drops several fantastic one-liners is just the two-minutes of footage, it will make you want more.

Black, who plays Professor Shelly Oberon in the movie, told The Hollywood Reporter how the late Robin Williams plays a sizable role in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, despite his character’s absence from the film.

“We’re exploring this jungle and trying to conquer the game; it’s life or death. But while we’re there, we find clues left behind by [Williams’ character Alan Parrish]. He built up a full-blown jungle house, similar to a Swiss Family Robinson situation. It’s like he’s there helping us without actually being there.”

Fans will be excited to hear Alan Parrish’s name, a direct tie to the original film which starred Williams.

The film opens December 20th and also stars Missi Pyle, Bobby Cannavale, Rhys Darby, Tim Matheson, and Nick Jonas. This new film is directed by Jake Kasdan.

Here’s the official synopsis for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle:

When four high-school kids discover an old video game console with a game they’ve never heard of – Jumanji – they are immediately drawn into the game’s jungle setting, literally becoming the avatars they chose: gamer Spencer becomes a brawny adventurer (Dwayne Johnson); football jock Fridge loses (in his words) “the top two feet of his body” and becomes an Einstein (Kevin Hart); popular girl Bethany becomes a middle-aged male professor (Jack Black); and wallflower Martha becomes a badass warrior (Karen Gillan). What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji – you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves – or they’ll be stuck in the game forever…
