Fifty new salmonella cases reported linked to Foster Farms chicken

In a follow up to an April report, the multistate Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak that began some 14 months ago, has grown by another 50 cases during the past six weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As of May 22, 2014, a total of 574 persons infected with seven outbreak strains of Salmonella Heidelberg have been reported from 27 states and Puerto Rico, since March 1, 2013. This is up from 25 states with Montana and Georgia reporting their first cases since the last CDC update.

77 percent of cases have been reported from California with 441 cases. For more infectious disease news and information, visit and “like” the Infectious Disease News Facebook page.

Eight states recorded cases since April 9: Arizona (1), California (42), Georgia (1), Montana (1), Nevada (1), Oregon (1), Texas (1), and Utah (2).

The CDC reports epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback investigations conducted by local, state, and federal officials indicate that consumption of Foster Farms brand chicken is the likely source of this outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg infections.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
