England: Salmonella outbreak linked to cooked ham sickens 51

A salmonella outbreak, which has affected more than 50 people in England and Wales, has been linked to cooked ham purchased at a small number of independent butchers.

According to Public Health England, there have been 21 confirmed cases in Wales where the outbreak was first detected, and a further 30 in England. Nine people have been hospitalized (5 in Wales and 4 in England). Other potential cases are being investigated in both countries.

The outbreak was first detected in Wales in August and centered mainly in North Wales (Conwy and Gwynedd), with additional clusters being investigated in England in the Thames Valley, Leeds, Cumbria and Stafford areas.

Cases are widely geographically distributed in patients aged 7 months to 87 years.

Testing has been carried out on ham supplied to a number of butchers identified in the investigation. No trace of salmonella has been found, but other hygiene issues were identified that led to one supplier voluntarily withdrawing certain batches of ham.

Dr Bob Adak, head of the gastrointestinal diseases department at PHE said:

Although the source of the outbreak has not been confirmed some of the cases have been linked to the consumption of cooked ham sold by a small number of independent butchers.

Investigating outbreaks of foodborne illness is a complex process as people have to try and remember what they ate some weeks prior to becoming unwell. In this instance many reported eating cooked meats. The FSA is following all possible leads along with Environmental Health to try and establish the source of the outbreak. This process is ongoing.
