Emma Stone talks Spider-Man, says Gwen Stacy is ‘great’

“The Amazing Spider-Man” will be an entire reboot of the Spidey film franchise, featuring a new cast, a new director and introduces new themes. Emma Stone is one of those new faces, playing Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s love interest in Spider-Man’s journey.

Columbia Pictures

MTV News caught up with Stone at the movie’s premiere, asking her about the role and her performance in a new video interview posted this weekend.

“Heh, Gwen’s really great, and I’m really glad that people like her,” the actress responded, joking that most actors quickly describe their characters as “great.”

Gwen and Peter have a fleeting love in the comic books before he pursued Mary Jane Watson, who was featured in the first three Spider-Man films.

Stone says she’s happy fans and audience was warming to the change in female leads.

“I’m really happy that people are responding well to the love story, because I think Gwen Stacy is such a special character.”

Opposite real-life boyfriend Andrew Garfield, the pair exude a believable love for one another and have been praised in some early reviews.

Gwen’s character meets a tragic and historic death in the comic book mythology, so the “Zombieland” actress is quick to point to that legacy as key to the Spider-man storyline.

“I really love the character of Gwen Stacy and the comic book history, and then hopefully what it will lead into is very special and important to the ‘Spider-Man’ saga. So I’m very excited that people seem to be responding well to that. Hopefully.”

Garfield and Stone lead an ensemble cast which includes Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors, who transforms into the creature called Lizard. Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Campbell Scott, and C. Thomas Campbell  all co-star.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” is directed by Marc Webb and comes to theaters July 3, 2012.
