Elijah Wood says Hollywood has pedophile problem in wake of ‘An Open Secret’ documentary
Elijah Woods may be forever remembered as Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s blockbuster Lord of the Rings film trilogy, but Wood is making a big splash with his comments on sexual abuse in Hollywood, saying that “a lot of vipers” roam the upper echelons of the entertainment biz, preying on naïvete and eagerness for fame.
Wood was a child actor and addressed the topic during a recent interview with Britain’s Sunday Times.

“Clearly something major was going on in Hollywood. It was all organized. There are a lot of vipers in this industry, people who only have their own interests in mind,” he told the Times.
“There is darkness in the underbelly. What bums me about these situations is that the victims can’t speak as loudly as the people in power. That’s the tragedy of attempting to reveal what is happening to innocent people: they can be squashed, but their lives have been irreparably damaged.”
“If you’re innocent, you have very little knowledge of the world and you want to succeed,” he added. “People with parasitic interests will see you as their prey. What upsets me about these situations is that the victims can’t speak as loudly as the people in power.”
Wood, 35, co-starred with fellow child star alongside Macaulay Culkin in The Good Son, and had a part in the Flipper remake. He said his mother, Debra, protected him from predators back then, and he “never went to parties where that kind of thing was going on.”
Here he took to Twitter afterward to clarify his remarks:
The Sunday Times interviewed me about my latest film but the story became about something else entirely. It prompted a number of false and misleading headlines. I had just seen a powerful documentary and I briefly spoke with the reporter about the subject which had consequences I did not intend or expect.
Lesson learned.
Let me be clear: This subject of child abuse is an important one that should be discussed and properly investigated. But as I made absolutely clear to the writer, I have no first hand experience or observation of the topic, so I cannot speak with any authority beyond articles I have read and films I have seen.
An Open Secret focuses on pedophilia in Hollywood and the alleged effect it has had on a number of child performers. Despite making headlines prior to its release, the documentary failed to find an audience in Europe and the U.S. last year. Check out the trailer below.
