Election 2020: Beto O’Rourke vows mandatory gun buyback to confiscate guns, shooting is ‘F-ed up’

During a campaign speeck in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, Beto O’Rourke was asked by a reporter how he’ll address peoples’ fears that the government is going to come and take their semi-automatic firearms.

O’Rourke responded: “I want to be really clear, that’s exactly what we are going to do. Americans who own [semi-automatic firearms] will have to sell them to the government.”

In the wake of this weekend’s shooting in Texas, Beto was quick to politicize and promise more gun control: “Our hearts are with Midland, Odessa, and everyone in West Texas who has to endure this again. More information is forthcoming, but here’s what we know: We need to end this epidemic. https://twitter.com/TexasTribune/status/1167920965478567936

This is the next tweet: “We don’t know how many have been killed. We don’t know the motivation. But here’s what we do know: This is f***ed up.”

Beto has also called for a ban on assault-style guns and high capacity magazines.

O’Rourke has also connected the shootings with an apparent rise in violent white supremacy and the leadership of President Trump.

“With 40,000 gun violence deaths in this country, not all of them are connected to white nationalism, white supremacy or white terrorism, but … you do have to connect the hatred, the racism, the president’s words and actions with the accessibility of those weapons that afford someone the means to conduct this kind of terror in this country,” he said in an interview with NPR earlier this week.

“If I don’t connect these dots, then I am complicit in the next mass murder or the next act of domestic terror,” he added.
