Ebola update: Liberia announces outbreak, suspected cases reported in Mali
UPDATE: Guinea Ebola numbers are 137 suspect/confirmed cases and 86 deaths.
The Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) outbreak first reported from forested areas in south-eastern Guinea has continued to increase and evolve.
In Guinea, as of April 2, the Ministry of Health in Guinea reported 134 clinically compatible cases of EVD, of which 35 are laboratory confirmed by PCR. Eighty-four of these patients died (case fatality ratio 63%), according to the latest numbers reported by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
In Guinea’s neighbor’s to the south, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the Liberian Ministry of Health officially announced an outbreak of EVD. As of Apr.2 , 14 confirmed or suspected cases have been identified including six fatalities.
There has been no change in Sierra Leone as they report two probable cases of EVD who died in Guinea and whose bodies were repatriated to Sierra Leone.
The UK news source, The Telegraph reports that Mali health officials it had detected three suspected victims of Ebola.
“Three suspected cases of haemorrhagic fever have been detected in the country. Samples have been taken and sent abroad for analysis,” the country’s Health Minister Ousmane Kone said.
The samples have been sent to the US Ceneters for Disease Control and Prevention for testing.
The outbreak strain of Ebola has been confirmed to be Zaire ebolavirus (98% homology).
