Donald Trump wins New York as Michael Steele joins John Kasich delusion

Donald Trump did what was expected, win big in his home state of New York, earning over 60% of the vote and 89 delegates thus far. Ohio Gov. John Kasich finished second with 3 delegates, just over 25% and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz proved to be too conservative for the moderate Republicans, earning just 14.5% of the vote and no delegates.

“We don’t have much of a race anymore,” Trump said during a victory celebration at Trump Tower, arriving onstage to Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.”

Trump said it would be “impossible” for rivals Ted Cruz and John Kasich to catch him in the Republican delegate race and that he would have enough support before the convention opens July 18 in Cleveland. “We are going to have an amazing number of weeks,” Trump predicted in his short victory speech.

Trump even referenced the battle that Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are currently waging for the support of Democratic superdelegates.

“Nobody should take delegates and claim victory unless they get those delegates with voters and voting,” he said. “And that’s what’s going to happen, and you watch, because the people aren’t going to stand for it. It’s a crooked system.”

Check out the clip below of his full speech.

Kasich broke his drought after not winning a delegate since Marco Rubio dropped out of the race and is somehow touting a big momentum to get the nomination.

“Even if they create rules, it doesn’t really matter,” said Kasich. “Nobody’s going to get enough delegates. I mean, the Trump organization is complaining all the time about this and that. You know why? Because they know they won’t have enough delegates to win on the first ballot, and then we’re going to be deadlocked.”

“For Kasich, it’s a great opportunity,” said Michael Steele, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee who served as lieutenant governor of Maryland. A good showing in Maryland, he said, would send a message to voters: “Don’t count this race done; don’t count his campaign out.”

Currently Kasich is still behind Rubio’s delegate count, 147 to Rubio’s 171. Trump’s big night gave him a lead of 845-559.

The campaign will stay “Trump friendly” with five states holding primaries next Tuesday: Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
