Dominican Republic reporting thousands of chikungunya and dengue cases

The Dominican Republic Ministry of Health says they are seeing an average of 188 chikungunya cases per day in chigger, San Cristobal and in Haina, according to a Entorno Inteligente report Friday (computer translated).

In total, there are 3,690 suspected chikungunya cases in San Cristobal alone with confirmed new cases of the mosquito borne virus in Hato Mayor, Santo Domingo and the National District.

So far 1,890 have been reported affected, with 77 severe cases and 13 deaths, while the cumulative incidence is 73 cases per 100,000 population, the report states.

83% of probable cases of dengue were reported in the provinces Santiago, Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Espaillat, Puerto Plata, Duarte, Maria Trinidad Sánchez, La Vega, Barahona, San Juan de la Maguana and the National District. 

Last year, dengue cases exceeded 16,000, and more than 100 deaths, being one of the most intense periods in recent years.
