‘Divergent’ finale, ‘Allegiant’ will be made into two films, set for 2016, 2017

Like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Twilight: Breaking Dawn and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, the Divergent franchise will see yet another film, this time in the form of a split.

Theo James and Shailene Woodley will be back for three more films as "Allegiant" will be split into two films.

Theo James and Shailene Woodley will be back for three more films as “Allegiant” will be split into two films.

The final film in the series, Allegiant, will be divided into two films, one set for 2016 and the other 2017.

Lionsgate states in the press release that “The Company will release a total of four Divergent films on its Summit Entertainment label, with the next film, Insurgent, which begins production next month, slated for release on March 20, 2015 and Allegiant – Parts 1 & 2 scheduled for release on March 18, 2016, and March 24, 2017, respectively.”

The popular series by author Veronica Roth made a prosperous leap to the big screen as Divergent earned nearly $120 million in US box office in just the first three weeks.

“Veronica Roth brings her captivating story to a masterful conclusion in Allegiant, a rich, action-packed book with material that is ideally suited to two strong and fulfilling movies,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger in the presser.

“The storytelling arc and world of the characters lend themselves perfectly to two films, a storytelling strategy that has worked very well for us on the two Twilight Breaking Dawn films and about which we’re tremendously enthusiastic for the two upcoming Mockingjay films of The Hunger Games franchise.”

The second film in the franchise, Insurgent, is set to arrive in theaters on March 20, 2015.
