Disney teases Emily Blunt in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ with a Spoonful of Sugar entrance
Disney teased their Christmas release of Mary Poppins Returns with a new clip released last night. Emily Blunt stars as the titular nanny, making her entrance with Poppins drifting down from the sky, with her trademark umbrella.
A Spoonful of Sugar can be heard in the background as she makes her entrance amid cloudy, windy skies.
Mary Poppins Returns takes place 25 years after the original Disney movie, which starred Julie Andrews in the titular role. The sequel centers on Poppins’ return to the family, when Michael suffers a personal loss in 1930s London.
The grown Michael will be played by Ben Whishaw (Q in the Daniel Craig led James Bond films) with Emily Mortimer his wife. Colin Firth will play a heartless bank manager named Mr. Wilkins with stars Julie Walters, Meryl Streep and Angela Lansbury. There is a new generation of Banks kids, John (Nathanael Saleh), Annabel (Pixie Davies), and Georgie (Joel Dawson) and a new chimney sweep: Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda).
Dick Van Dyke will also be appearing in a minor role. The film will be directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago) from the script by Finding Neverland writer David Magee.
Mary Poppins Returns is set for a December 25, 2018 release date.
