Disney sets ‘Snow White’ live-action film adaptation with ‘Girl on the Train’ writer

Disney sets another live-action remake of one of their classic animated films, this time the very first animated feature: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the live-action Snow White remake as Disney has hired Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) to pen the scirpt and Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land) are attached to write new music.

“There have been several other adaptations of the classic tale over the years, of course,” the THR recounted “Two more recent attempts include the 2012 film Mirror Mirror, starring Julia Roberts and Lily Collins, and Universal’s darker take, Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart. Snow White also is a character on the TV series Once Upon a Time.”

The 1937 classic film was a major hit, nominated for Best Score at that year’s Academy Awards and won an honorary Oscar for Walt Disney. Adjusted for inflation, it is the tenth-highest grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office.

Snow White is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, but it’s fair to say that for many people who grew up with the movie, the Disney version is the definitive version.

The source listed the other upcoming projects: “Disney has been on a roll with its new takes on its animated classics, including such successes as Maleficent, The Jungle Book and Cinderella. The studio’s next live-action fairytale release, which also features another empowered heroine, will be Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson, which is set to open March 17. Disney also is developing a live-action version of Mulan for 2018, and has brought back Jon Favreau to helm a new take on The Lion King. A live-action Aladdin also is in the works, with Guy Ritchie attached to direct.”
