Mary Poppins Returns takes place 25 years after the original Disney movie, which starred Julie Andrews in the titular role. The sequel centers on Poppins’ return to the family, when Michael suffers a personal loss in 1930s London.
The grown Michael will be played by Ben Whishaw (Q in the Daniel Craig led James Bond films) with a promised appearance by Dick Van Dyke.
Andrews spoke in June about being absent from the new film: “It’s 55 years since that Mary Poppins was made. This Mary Poppins is going to star Emily Blunt, and I’m a huge fan,” she said. “It’s a totally different story. You know, Disney had all the other Mary Poppinsstories in its archives. So, why not use them up and make another one?”
“It’s [Blunt’s] movie,” Andrews declared. “It’s not a recreation of the movie by any means. …It is about the same character and other aspects that she did in her life.”
Speaking to USA Today, Emily said she had channelled the “eccentric and wacky” side of Mary Poppins, as well as her surprising sass.
“[She’s] incredibly vain and rude to the children,” she explained. “As a British person, I really responded to that lack of saccharine relationships.
“I find it comforting, the idea of someone just sweeping in who’s no-nonsense and cleaning everything up and making everything right again in a magical way that’s not sentimental.”
Colin Firth will play a heartless bank manager named Mr. Wilkins with stars Emily Mortimer, Julie Walter, Meryl Streep and Angela Lansbury.
Mary Poppins Returns is set for a December 25, 2018 release date.
