Disney D23: ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ footage, details revealed
From Disney’s D23 Expo, Alice Through the Looking Glass footage teased the new film, which acts as both sequel and prequel to Tim Burton’s 2010 film, with The Muppets director James Bobin taking the helm.
From the panel discussion, it was stated that the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and Alice (Mia Wasikowska) venture on a journey through time, aided by Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen), “a peculiar creature who is part human, part clock.”
Mia Wasikowska appeared on stage at D23, revealing that in the story, something has gone terribly wrong with her beloved Hatter, leading her on a journey through time in which we see the characters as their younger selves and discover some of the reasons for the Hatter’s madness.
A teaser clip featured characters on a boat, with Alice told “friends can be neglected… hurry, follow that passage, and mind your step” which prompts the titular character to step through the door in the sky and fall through. Cohen’s Time has a distracting “helmet of hair” and says: “You cannot change the past,” he tells her, “but you might learn from it.”
The Hatter’s hair has turned gray and this is a sign of him “going bad.” Anne Hathaway is back as the stoic White Queen and so is the zany Queen of Hearts, played by Helena Bonham Carter.
Throughout the clip, the footage maintains the style and feel of the first film, but there appears to be more practical sets as the pair journey in the “Underland.”
Disney dropped the two new posters to kick off the D23 weekend, check out more on that here.
Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Toby Jones, Paul Whitehouse, Timothy Spall, Barbara Windsor and Martin Sheen also star. New to this film is Rhys Ifans (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Amazing Spider-Man) as the Mad Hatter’s father Zanik Hightopp, and Ed Speleers (Downton Abbey) as James Harcourt.
Alice Through The Looking Glass opens on May 27th, 2016
