Director Roberto Orci confirms ‘five year mission’ begins for ‘Star Trek 3’

Director JJ Abrams has moved on to the Star Wars franchise, but writer Roberto Orci will now take over for the third Star Trek film. Orci teased the setting of Trek 3 and links to the original series.

“They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space,” Orci began.

Orci was speaking with Geoff Boucher on his show Humans From Earth, so here’s the full transcript of his remarks: “In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie.  So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.”

Orci was a key creator on the first two rebooted films and “was lobbying hard” to get the director’s chair. He has been working with Patrick McKay & John D. Payne on the script and left the Sony deal to work on their series of Spidey films to lead Trek 3.

While Paramount hasn’t even mentioned a release date yet, but 2016 would mark the 50th anniversary of the franchise, so an announcement confirming that time frame would not surprise anyone.

No plot details, even though Chris Pine says he’d love to see Kirk “go dark,” after getting the blood transfusion from Khan. More on those remarks: HERE

MTV speculated on some villain options, besides just Klingons, which include The Borg, Romulans, more Tribbles, several from Next Generation (Q, Tolian Soran) and the Gorn:

Star Trek lizard like creature Gorn photo“…one of Orci’s fave races, the lizard-like killers could be written off as they were featured heavily in the also-in-continuity tie-in video game. But hey, it might be nice to have some non-human villains in the next film, and the audience that played the video game isn’t the one seeing the movies, for the most part. File this under maybe.”

The MTV article adds one interesting one which could be a backdrop to a main villain: Section 31.

“The semi-evil spy organization that tried to control Khan in “Into Darkness” is still around in the comics, and continues to be an engaging foil for the crew. Their mission is to protect Earth, the Federation and its interests, so one would think they wouldn’t venture into deep space. But involving Section 31 in some aspect would allow new human characters to enter the mix where they might not otherwise.”

Star Trek 3 is very likely arriving in theaters in 2016, so check back for an official date once it’s announced.
