Director David Ayer talks ‘Suicide Squad,’ directing Ben Affleck as Batman, music in film

Warner Bros is happy with the box office success of Batman V Superman despite tough criticisms from fans and reviews. Next up is Suicide Squad with Fury director David Ayer who spoke at CinemaCon about the film, reshoots, directing Ben Affleck’s Batman and much more.

Ayer was speaking during the Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon, the filmmaker was asked about the reshoots and whether it was simply a case of the studio asking Ayer what else he wanted for the film, with Ayer responding that he’d like another set piece.

And I don’t think there’s any director that finishes a movie and says, ‘Wow that’s perfect, that’s what I really want it to be.’ Every movie I’ve ever made I wish I could go and grab some additional stuff and that’s exactly the chance I got this time. It’s like getting a new car but you get fancy rims and a new stereo.”

Queen music has been set in the background of the trailers and Ayers says fans can expect more: “It’s gonna be an interesting soundtrack, let’s just say that. We have some really cool original things coming in but also some familiar things too, and a great score.”

Ayer revealed his inner fanboy when it came to directing Affleck as Batman.

“I mean look, as a kid I was a fan of DC Comics. I read them, I love Batman. Batman was always my favorite superhero, and then to have him walk on my set one day was an incredible experience. Even my cynical, hard-bitten movie crew got quiet when that happened. And Ben’s a great dude, he’s a good guy to work with.”

The Suicide Squad cast includes Will Smith as Deadshot, a master assassin who never misses; Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, the insane counterpart of the Joker; Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as the grotesque Killer Croc, one of Batman’s main villains; Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, who enjoys a good fight; and of course, Jared Leto as a new version of the Clown Prince of Crime.
Joel Kinnaman‘s Rick Flagg, who is being ordered around by Viola Davis‘ Amanda Waller, who is just using these bad guys to do some dirty work.

Suicide Squad arrives in theaters on August 5.
