Details of the M Night Shayamalan film, ‘After Earth’ released, stars Will Smith
Will Smith will team with “The Sixth Sense” director M. Night Shyamalan and his son, Jadan (“Karate Kid” reboot) in next summer’s Sci-Fi film “After Earth.” Weeks before the San Diego Comic Con, where a panel for “After Earth” is scheduled, fans get a brief synopsis on the project.
Columbia Pictures released these details on Monday, which has now been published by several websites, such as Den of Geek.
“In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.”
The film has been kept underwraps, very secretive and the San Diego comic convention panel will some insight into the film with screenwriter, Gary Whitta, and cinematographer Peter Suschitzky, as well as the team behind the tie-in comic book After Earth: Innocence, artist Beni Lobel and writers Robert Greenberger and Michael Friedman. Peter David, author of the After Earth prequel novel, will also be there.
Greenberger has been vocal on his website about the production, excitement during set visits and his “bible” of contributions to the film.
“We delivered a 273-page Bible, color coded to identify different threads and timelines. Fairly quickly, word came back that they loved it. Then they asked for some minor tweaks. Since then, after a new screenplay draft was written by Stephen Gaghan, they have come back to us to do some additional writing as new elements required explanation and background,” he wrote back in February.
Will and Jaden Smith are joined by Isabelle Fuhrman (“Orphan”, “The Hunger Games”), David Denman, Lincoln Lewis and Sophie Okenedo.
“After Earth” is set to arrive in theaters June 7, 2013.
