Despite threats of leftist protests, Georgia Gov Brian Kemp signs abortion bill into law, CNN calls it controversial

Georgia’s Republican Gov. Brian Kemp stood strong against threats of leftist protests and boycotts, signing House Bill 481 into law Tuesday, banning most abortions after a detectable heartbeat.

The law does contain exceptions in cases of rape, incest, physical medical emergencies, and pregnancies deemed “medically futile.” The ban would essentially start around six weeks and go into effect in January 2020.

Kemp kept his campaign promise in signing the “Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act,” which Kemp said signifies that “Georgia is a state that values life,” adding that “We stand up for those who are unable to speak for themselves.”

State Rep. Ed Setzler pointed to science, law, and the simple fact that common sense says a beating heart is a sign of life and those children should receive the full protection of the law. State Sen. Renee Unterman, a former nurse who ushered the bill through the state Senate, said she has waited her entire time as a legislator for this moment, calling it the “culmination of my political career.”

“It’s a historic day for Georgia, for Georgia families, and for those precious unborn babies,” state Rep. Ginny Ehrhart, one of HB 481’s cosponsors, added on Fox & Friends Tuesday morning.

Actress Alyssa Milano and Hollywood institutions such as the Writers Guild of America have threatened to boycott Georgia if the ban was signed.

“When you ban abortion, women die,” Milano claimed during a protest at the state capital last month, using the mythical “back-alley” argument. “We cannot continue to allow these white men, middle-aged men, to dictate what we’re able to do with our bodies.”

“I can’t govern because I’m worried about what someone in Hollywood thinks about me,” Kemp responded, CBN News reports. “I ran the last two years on these issues, and I got elected with the largest number of votes in the history of the state of Georgia, and I’m doing what I told people I would do.

“…But our job is to do what is right, not what is easy,” Kemp added. “We will not back down. We will always continue to fight for life.”

Planned Parenthood responded to the signing by declaring, “We warned them – we will see you in court, Governor Kemp. And we are coming for their seats.”

Despite other states having stricter abortion laws, heartbeat bills, CNN called it “controversial,” quoting opponents and no pro-life support groups.

“This law is bafflingly unconstitutional. Bans like this have always been blocked by courts. We will be suing Georgia to make sure this law has the same fate,” Elisabeth Smith, Chief Counsel at the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement.
