‘Despicable Me’ spinoff ‘Minions’ movie moved to July 4th weekend in 2015
2013 was a crowded year for animated films: The Croods, Epic, Monsters University, Despicable Me 2, Turbo, and Planes all opened in the space of six months, and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Free Birds, and Frozen are due out in the next several weeks.
Earlier this week, Pixar announced that they were moving The Good Dinosaur from 2014 to 2015, leaving the company without a feature next year. Now Universal Studios is following suit, pushing their Minions spinoff from holiday 2014 to summer 2015.
THR reports that Universal is delaying Minions by about seven months, from December 19, 2014 to July 10, 2015. Meanwhile, an untitled Illumination project that the studio had slotted for July 3, 2015 is now being pushed to February 12, 2016. The studio does not have another film lined up for July 3.
Studio insiders say Universal was so happy with the July 2013 release date for Illumination’s Despicable Me 2 that it decided to open Minions in roughly the same corridor.
Despicable 2, debuting on July 2, has grossed a staggering $840.5 million to date.
Independence Day 2 and the new Terminator open the week before, and Ant-Man, The Smurfs 3, and the Man of Steel sequel arrive in theaters later in the month.
