Dengue fever confirmed in Miami-Dade County, Treasure Coast total now at seven cases
After reports of “locally-acquired” dengue fever cases in Martin and St. Lucie Counties on Florida’s east coast, their neighboring county to the south, Miami-Dade announced Friday the confirmation of a case of the mosquito borne disease.
The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County says they have a confirmed, locally-acquired dengue fever case in a 18-year-old man, prompting health officials to issue a mosquito-borne illness advisory.
Dr. Alvaro Mejia-Echeverry, a medical epidemiologist with the Florida Department of Health’s Miami-Dade office said, “He did not report any travel history in the timeframe that we would consider to be important,” according to a Miami Herald report.
In addition, Meji-Echeverry says the young man has fully recovered from his bout with dengue fever.
In a follow up in Martin County, The Martin County Health Department has reported three additional cases yesterday, bringing the total on the Treasure Coast to seven.
