Democratic strategist Zerlina Maxwell argues ‘telling men not to rape’ women trumps the need for guns as self defense

While appearing on Fox News Tuesday night with Sean Hannity, Democratic Strategist Zerlina Maxwell argued that preventing rape should start by simply “telling men not to rape women.”

Zerlina Maxwell rape prevention gun controlMaxwell was arguing against women using guns as a means of self-defense when she made the remarks.

Hannity began by slamming these “ignorant politicians” in Colorado for trying to remove a woman’s right to use a firearm to defend herself against an attacker via gun control legislation.

“I don’t think that we should be telling women anything,” Maxwell said. “I think we should be telling men not to rape women and start the conversation there.”

“Criminals are not going to listen to that,” Hannity said.

“You are talking about it as if there is some faceless, nameless criminal, when a lot of times it is someone that you know and trust,” Maxwell replied.

Hannity countered with a comment about evil in the world and women bracing themselves accordingly.

“We can prevent rape by telling men not to commit it,” Maxwell said, repeating the same claim.

Maxwell, who is a rape survivor herself, said she wants women to “not be in this situation.” She added that if you “train” men not to be rapists, we can prevent rape.

“If firearms were the answer, then the military would be the safest place for women and it’s not,” she said.

IF MOST FEMALE RAPE-VICTIMS KNOW THEIR RAPISTS – i.e., BOYFRIENDS/HUSBANDS – THEN IT SEEMS THE ISSUE OF GUN PROTECTION IS SILLY. [Remember, Lorena Bobbitt]. THESE FEMALES MAY COOK FOOD FOR THESE MALES (WHICH CAN BE TAINTED); AND, AT SOME POINT, THESE MALES MUST SLEEP (USE OF SCOLDING-HOT WATER, ETC.).

GUN OWNERSHIP IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. MANY FEMALES ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH GUNS – I BELIEVE, BECAUSE FEMALES ARE MORE LIKELY TO LIVE WITH THE DESPAIR OF HAVING KILLED. [Like, females who regret having an abortion].

She’s an absolute idiot! Gee. Why oh why didn’t anyone think of this before now? Need to make a national message “any potential rapist out there, don’t rape”! That oughta solve all the rapes now! Next we need to tell all idiots to use super glue instead of lip gloss. That should solve that, huh?

  3. JohnnyD says:

This woman is talking plain truth, sorry to break it to most of you. This woman is talking just about rape, not guns. She trying to point out that rapists can be all sorts of acquaintances to a woman, even (gasp!) in situations where she might not be carrying a gun. I suspect many are working very hard to intentionally stay ignorant of this fact.

  4. Common Sense says:

She doesn’t mean that the solution is as simple as telling men not to rape and this has simply been overlooked since the dawn of time.

She means that when rape is a big enough problem for us to be having conversations about whether or not women should be permanently armed, there needs to be a conversation about how, as a society, we may improve the social development of boys.

  5. Next Step says:

Next we can tell all the murderers not to kill, and the thieves not to steal. We’ll never have another crime!

[…] Strategist Zerlina Maxwell has come up with a surefire strategy to eliminate rape: simply “telling men not to rape […]

  7. anon says:

I wonder why the man who raped her didn’t listen.

  8. Disgusted with Stupid People says:

Zerlina are you really that naive? Don’t you think men already have been told that they shouldn’t rape women? They already know it and they do it anyway. I’m sick of people like you who want to take away my right to defend myself…if you really believe this drivel you are spouting…why not test it yourself and see how well it works. I’m curious though, are you like Diane Feinstein, the hypocrite, who bought guns herself when she was being stalked years back, but now that she can afford bodyguards, she abuses her political office to attempt making the rest of us defenseless…but thinks she is privileged to have a different set of rules for herself? Tell us Zerlina…what is it that makes you think you have a rright to take my rights away?

  9. John says:

I was in the Military for 21 years & most of the military does not carry firearms stateside. Depending on the current area you are in is when you get them issued to you. Does not support your claim about the military. I would have to question your statement about telling men not to rape. I ride public transportation sometimes & there is a sign asking people not to use foul language or play loud music, usually the sign is ignored so people won’t do what you tell them to do.

  10. Ed says:

Hey can we teach our enemies to stop bombing & killing innocent people too? Sucks that she got rape, but she now deserves a throat punch for that stupid comment. She just told the whole world that she’s an easy target and women need to sheep.

  11. Kim says:

Please educate yourself on the facts about the relationship between most sexual assault victims and their attackers. A gun is not likely to be available in these situations. http://www.rainn.org/statistics

    • Don says:

Kim, how and where to you reach the conclusion that a weapon would not benefit a potential victim? Statistics are numbers and are easily manipulated. You can not honestly believe that if you were under imminent threat that you would not use a handgun to defend yourself.

      • Mayla Smith says:

Kim didn’t say a weapon wouldn’t benefit a victim, she said it’s likely not to be available. If it’s in a purse, a woman might not be able to get to it.

  12. Dst1964 says:

I just watched this on my DVR this evening from last night and I am just dumbfounded! I’m sorry Zerlina, but your theory of just telling young men not to rape is a ridiculously naive dreamworld that you and your crazy left wing friends are pushing into young girls minds! I was a victim of sexual abuse and you definitely weren’t going to get my priest to just not abuse me because somebody told him not to do so…nope, there are truly evil people who are fricking SICK AND YOU COULD SCREAM, PLEAD, BEG, AND BRIBE THEM NIT TO RAPE YOU BECAUSE THEY DON’T CARE AND ARE SICK M’frs. If you don’t already get this, then you never will…and although I’ve never agreed with you politically, I am flabbergasted at the thought if a young woman being so thoroughly against guns so much that you would rather other young women be kept from defending themselves only for your political gain!

  13. Stupid people like this says:

Are you serious?! This is the dumbest crap I’ve ever heard! Shes a disgrace to women! I don’t think no man is tought to rape its what they choose to do….And telling them not to do it sure hasn’t worked in the past do why would it now?! I can’t believe this actually came out of a rape victims mouth! You can give your protection up if you want an be a victim but leave my rights to protect my self alone! I’m also a victim and I said no and faught the best I could but it didn’t work…..never again! No one cares if you want to be a victim then thats your right but you leave mine alone! I will say it agian you are a disgrace to women! This is the stupidest crap anyone could’ve ever came up with! Let me know how this works out for you when you tell a rapeist NO! I’m sure they’ll listen just because you said NO!

  14. Mandy Harper says:

Did this woman just fall out of the stupid tree? Damn, woman, if it were that easy we wouldn’t have any crime in the entire world!!! I think you just insulted rape victims the world over with that absolutely idiotic comment. So, to some it up if a man comes into my home with the intent of raping me I should just say, “Don’t rape me please”? OR should I tell that evil sumbitch if he steps one foot farther into my house I’ll pump his guts full of lead? I’m going with Option B. You talk you idiot. I’ll act. We’ll see who comes out unscathed.

  15. Anonymous says:

She is very ignorantand has no business representing women as she knows nothing about how to protect anything or herself for that matter.

  16. justiceday says:

This just shows that anyone can get a degree and become a lawyer. This woman has no clue. Rapist like to be in control not told what to do. She is exactly the problem with this country.
Maybe she could talk to the US military and ask them to stop raping.
