Democrat robocalls for Ed Jany set to sabotage Lucas Overby against David Jolly
The 13th Congressional District race in Florida is heating up in a bizarre fashion. David Jolly has been endorsed by both big Tampa Bay-Pinellas newspapers, in large part because he’s pro-gay marriage and anti-Paul Ryan’s budget. There is no Democrat in the race, but there is mixed support for Libertarian Lucas Overby who is described as some sort of “moderate” Libertarian seeking “incremental change” in Washington.
Now Democrat robocalls for Charlie Crist are also calling for voters to pull the proverbial lever for Ed Jany, a candidate which dropped out the race in May.
“He apparently informed the Federal Election Commission that he was withdrawing but failed to notify the county supervisor of elections. So his name stayed on with incumbent Republican Rep. David Jolly and Libertarian Lucas Overby because of printing deadlines. A notice about his withdrawal is being placed in absentee ballots mailed to voters and will be at early-voting sites and polling places on Election Day, but it just adds to the dysfunction that has, sadly, made voting in one of Florida’s few competitive congressional districts a joke,” notes TBO columnist Joe Brown.
He adds that “the overwhelming majority of voters won’t pick Jany, but it will be interesting to see how many do.” I’m not sure the Overby camp will share that sentiment.
Republicans rallied behind Jolly to send the lobbyist to Washington in a special election earlier this year. Overby only garnered 5% of that vote, a fact the TBT mentioned before endorsing Jolly without any explanation.
“Jolly is off to an impressive start in Congress. He is in tune with his constituents and speaks his mind on issues important to the district and the country. For U.S. House District 13, The Tampa Tribune recommends David Jolly,” says TBO as they endorsed Jolly while offering backhanded compliments to Overby.
The Jany factor will likely result in 10-20 of the vote, leaving Overby a difficult hurdle to get to 30% – let alone win.
