‘Dark Knight Rises’ Bat Signal shines bright in Pittsburgh

Filming starts this week in Pittsburgh for “The Dark Knight Rises”, local tech companies Idea Foundry and Lightwave International displayed the symbol on the Highmark building. Christopher Nolan choses the Steel City over Chicago and other locations to be the Gotham City is the third installment of his Batman trilogy.

Mike Matesic, CEO of Idea Foundry, said his company “is delighted only only to see major motion pictures like ‘Batman’ choose to film in Pittsburgh, but also to help them take advantage of all the other benefits our region’s technology companies have to offer.

“What we’re seeing with Lightwave is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how our local tech companies can help filmmakers produce, market, and generate new revenue streams for their movies and TV productions.”

Gov. Tom Corbett and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato attended a media event for the film. The two faced off in the 2010 election, but on Thursday both agreed on one thing: Filming the newest Batman movie in Pittsburgh is great for the city.

Nolan praised Pittsburgh’s downtown architecture at the event, calling it “incredibly valuable” to the look of the upcoming film. Some streets will be covered in artificial snow for scenes, despite the summer heat. “The architecture of this city—it’s a very beautiful city, on a very impressive scale,” Nolan said.

Star Christian Bale, casually dressed, joked about the effects of the fake snow on the city:

“Well, I hope that all of you guys are going to feel cooler ’cause of the fake snow, I certainly won’t be — stuck in that rubber suit all the time.”

The press conference will held at the Renaissance Hotel (downtown) and Bale seemed relaxed, adding:

“I’ve never been to Pittsburgh before, Bale said dodging details about the script, he only added: “There will be fighting on the streets a great deal,”

“Thank you so much for your generosity of spirit and hospitality ahead of time, and we’ll try and stay out of your hair as much as possible and hopefully leave with good memories for everybody.”

“The Dark Knight Rises” opens July 20, 2012.
