Daniel Lee Morris identified as driver in USF wrong way crash which killed 4 students

The Florida Highway Patrol identified the driver of Sunday’s wrong-way crash on Interstate 275 as Daniel Lee Morris Tuesday afternoon.

Morris, age 28, had borrowed the 2001 Ford Expedition from a friend he had been staying with, police detailed. Morris is said to have moved here from Michigan and was living with Scott Enfinger.

The SUV crashed into a Hyundai Sonata killing Dammie Yesudhas, Jobin Kuriakose, both 21, Imtiyaz Jim Ilias, age 20, and Ankeet Patel, age 22. Morris was driving at high speeds on 275 North and the accident occurred just north of Busch Boulevard.

Identification took several days because Morris’ body was “very badly burned,” FHP spokesman Sgt. Steve Gaskins said.

“When you’re doing any definitive ID, you’re looking for either fingerprints, dental X-rays or some other antemortem,”  Dick Bailey, the medical examiner’s operations manager said.

Morris has no criminal record in Florida.

The four students were part of the Sigma Beta Rho fraternity at USF. Three were current students, while one was a recent graduate. A memorial for those killed will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the USF student center on Thursday, February 13.

No official cause or motive was revealed as many theorize he was on a suicide mission and/or intoxicated. Toxicology reports will take six to eight weeks to come back, Gaskins said.
