D23: ‘The Mandalorian’ trailer, Ming-Na Wen cast, new poster
The first live-action Star Wars series is coming to Disney+ this fall is The Mandalorian and fans at teh D23 Expo got a big tease and the trailer is below.
Created by Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man, the new Star Wars series focuses on Pedro Pascal as a Mandalorian bounty hunter whose reputation is so well known that he’s only referred to by his titular moniker.
“Do these people not look like they belong in the Star Wars universe?” Favreau said as cast members like Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, and Giancarlo Esposito joined him on the D23 stage.
During the presentation, Favreau explained how he pitched Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy a story that took place after the revolution, when the galaxy degraded into chaos. The Empire has been overthrown, there’s no replacement government in place yet, and chaos reigns across the galaxy. This is before the formation of the First Order as introduced in Force Awakens.
One of the big new details was the appearance by Agents of SHIELD star Ming-Na Wen, who made an appearance, introduced by Disney head Bob Iger.
“I’m such a geek girl, and [Disney] please just keep acquiring all these different franchises because I just keep getting employed by them. I have hit every bucket list thanks to Disney. I used to pray to God, Buddha and the Force when I was a little girl, so it’s astounding to me.”
At Star Wars Celebration Chicago in April, Pascal repeated the talking point that the Mandalorian is “a mysterious lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy,” said Pascal. “Some might say he has questionable moral character.”
The Mandalorian also stars Nick Nolte, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, and Taika Waititi, and the first season of episodes will be directed by filmmakers like Dave Filoni, Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow.
Carano revealed at Star Wars Celebration that she will play an ex-rebel shock trooper and Weathers plays Greef Carga.
“He’s kinda the head of this guild of bounty hunters,” Weathers revealed at Star Wars Celebration. “The Mando is a guy who he figures can get the job done.”
Esposito plays an Imperial officer (or possibly a former Imperial, given the show’s timeframe), Herzog’s character is some sort of crime boss and Abtahi’s is a doctor.
Waititi will voice the android bounty hunter like, IG-88, IG-11, teased in a poster below (add there’s a quick shot in the trailer).
The Mandalorian begins streaming on Disney+ on November 12, 2019.
